Genealogy Tidbits:
Murray County Vital Statistics
A recent news release states that as of August 1, 2000, all persons requesting certified birth or
death certificates from a Minnesota county recorder's office (or equivalent) will be required to
fill out an affidavit. If the request is mailed, notarization will be required. The individual
will be required to show proof of identity when coming in person. This is a new state law to help
cut down on fraud.
Vital records in Minnesota begin with the origination of a given county, generally around 1870.
However, many vital records were not recorded during those early years. Birth and death records
are held at the county courthouse in the county where the event occurred.
Duplicate copies of birth records since 1900 and death records since 1908 from all Minnesota
counties are held at the Minnesota Department of Health, Section of Vital Statistics Registration,
717 Delaware Street, SE, P.O. Box 9441, Minneapolis, Minnsota 55440.
Marriage records generally begin with the formation of the county where the marriage occurred and
remain at the county level in the county courthouse.
