Some free Alabama marriage records are available at links listed below. Meanwhile some data from
the State are outlined in the following paragraphs.
The Alabama Center for Health Statistics began filing Alabama marriage records in 1936.
(Information for marriages prior to 1936 must be obtained from the probate office in the county where
the marriage license was issued.)
The fee to search for an Alabama marriage record is $12.00, which includes one certified copy of
the marriage certificate or a "Certificate of Failure to Find." For each additional copy of
the certificate ordered at the same time, the fee is $4.00. Checks or Money Orders should be
made payable to "Vital Records." Please do not send cash. Fees are non refundable. Additional
fees are required for expedited service.
The Center for Health Statistics has some death, Alabama marriage records, and Alabama divorce indexes available for
purchase on rolls of 16 mm microfilm. This film contains copies of old paper indexes as they
were originally created to use to search for or locate vital records in the Center for Alabama vital records.
(Note we still use many of these indexes to search for records today.)
Since these indexes were made at different times, they are grouped with different periods
of years together. They also contain very limited information for searching or locating records.
