Alberta Marriage Records:

The Provincial Archives of Alberta is responsible for acquiring, preserving and making available records of enduring value created by the Government of Alberta.

The following are a few collections that may be of interest to genealogists.

Vital Statistics' civil registers (1870 - 1983) can be examined after reading and signing an agreement covering use. A file list organized by locality is available.

Some name indexes are also available. Transcripts can be provided for a small fee.

The Provincial Archives of Alberta holds original vital statistics certificates issued up to and including August 31, 1905. Transcripts of such certificates can be obtained for a $5.00 fee + GST plus a mailing fee.

To obtain a copy of a certificate issued after September 1, 1905 please visit the Vital Statistics Web Page.

Homestead records (c. 1885 - 1930) contain information about individuals who obtained land in Alberta under the Dominion Lands Act. Files may provide information on the applicant's age, marital status, number of children, place of birth, employment, value of improvements, dates of entry and patent.

Other land records available at the Provincial Archives of Alberta may be valuable sources of genealogical information.

These include records of School land sales, mineral rights and tax arrears. Special land related programs are documented such as irrigation projects, seed grain relief and Agricultural relief loans.

Legal records are an excellent source of information. Of primary importance are the records of civil and criminal cases heard in Alberta courts. The Provincial Archives also hold some probate and divorce files. These court records are supplemented by Attorney General's criminal case files, inquest files, and coroners' files.

This collection of links to Alberta marriage records will hopefully meet your needs for free marriage records. In any case, I will continue to look for more links and will add them as they are found.

It is a huge job to look for and find these kind of free links, so bear with me as I continue my search for you. I truly hope I can find many more and that you can avoid the pay for service sites.

Unfortunately, sometimes those free records just don't get you all the information you need! If you hit that brickwall then you may have to try a "fee based" service. There are "free trial" offers available, so maybe you don't have to spend a cent (hurray!), as you can try the service free for a couple of weeks.

The best known Genealogy services that deliver lots of value for the money are...

I do hope you can find what you need for free! But I can vouch for either of these services in that they do deliver lots of content and value for the money and have been of great help to me. It is a personal choice as to which one is better, or whether to use either one at all.
